The Parish Paper
The Parish Paper
The Parish Paper is sunsetting as of the final edition, June 2022, which is posted below. Read the official statement from the current co-editors Cynthia Woolever and Dana Horrell:
When Lyle S. Schaller founded The Parish Paper in 1971, he did so believing that helping church leaders ask the right questions led to better decision making. Herb Miller, the subsequent editor, brought a commitment to small church vitality and a belief that stewardship fueled generosity. The next editor, Cynthia Woolever, a sociologist specializing in religion, brought a data-driven perspective from her research of U.S. congregations. Dana Horrell, the current editor, brings a commitment to parish ministry and grounded experience from decades of pastoral leadership. From the beginning, The Parish Paper's business model has been reprint-rights: one subscription with multiple copies for a church or judicatory. That model fit well for the age of the mimeograph and the monthly packet of photocopied information sheets sent out by the judicatory office. However, the rise of the Internet, the invention of the iPhone, and the dominance of social media have rendered this model obsolete. Consequently, this is the final edition of The Parish Paper. We thank the loyal subscribers who have been part of this ministry.
The Parish Paper offers "ideas and insights for active congregations" and is co-edited monthly by Dana Horrell and Cynthia Woolever. The SNEUCC Conference has a paid subscription to The Parish Paper, which INCLUDES:
- Permission to provide copies to our staff and to the congregations within our jurisdiction in any of the following ways: Email, postal, newspaper, newsletter, meetings, training events, and our website
- Permission for each congregation within our jurisdiction to (a) photocopy or electronically distribute for local use as many copies as it needs, (b) post them on its website, and (c) quote sentences and paragraphs.
Congregations within the Southern New England Conference jurisdiction to which we distribute The Parish Paper do NOT have permission (a) to delete the copyright ownership notice, (b) to re-write, paraphrase, delete, or change the wording of sentences and paragraphs, or (c) to give ANY THIRD PARTY—other than our staff and constituents—permission to photocopy or reprint (in any quantity, no matter how small, whether for free distribution or for sale).
